Yeah for rain! The garden was ready for a good drink and we got it. We’re trying to catch up with the bustle of weed growth that follows such heat and humidity, but we’re making good headway. The broccoli has unleashed itself upon us this week. It didn’t seem to matter what day length variety I planted for the summer harvest, all varieties have become ready at once. Can you imagine swimming in a large pool of broccoli? These are the strange kind of dreams a veggie farmer can have this time of year. Anyways, I’d recommend not holding the broccoli in the fridge for a week as these heads are ready to eat. We enjoyed a large bowl of broccoli salad and this is always a good way to use up a larger portion of broccoli.

The farm is busy with all kinds of activity. Garden work and small maintenance projects, but also preparations for a big wedding here this Saturday. So we’ll switch gears at the end of the week to prepare for our wood-fired pizza nights as well as the food for 150 wedding guests on Saturday. Friday night we’ll be entertained by the Beef Slough Boys and savory slough tunes from 6-9pm. Thank goodness summer brings with it an abundance of energy with its long days. I need it right now.

I hope you all are enjoying your weekly farm shares as the diversity grows and the weight of the boxes increases each week. Next week, we may have our first carrots in for the year. The zucchini, yellow squash, and cucs will be turning on soon. And we’ve started eating the first of some tomatoes, but these are just teasers as there’s not enough to disperse yet. Soon though they’ll be on as well! Food is just so exciting and I’m enjoying cookin’ up all the delights of the season.

Eat Well. Smile Often.
