The chill of fall has taken hold and what a better way to warm up those chilly fingers and toes than a bowl of soup or a cup of homemade hot cocoa. For those that like it homemade, here’s a cocoa recipe we’ve made that is tasty. We also linked a lettuce soup recipe for those that are struggling to finish your salad bags.
Last week proved to be a rough week as Ashlan and I were both sick and run down. Extra sleep has helped but I think I need some good winter hibernation time to get fully rested up. In the meantime, I am working at getting the garlic crop in the ground and mulched. We have about 70# of whole garlic bulbs which were pulled apart into individual cloves. Each clove is planted and will grow into a harvestable bulb by next July.
We’ve heard that some MN farmer’s garlic crops were hit hard by a disease spread by a leaf hopper (insect). All of those affected crops could be used for fresh eating, but could not be used for planting. So these farmers were forced to source seed to start their garlic plots from scratch. Seed garlic costs about $10-$15/#. So our plot equals about $1000 in seed stock. It’s quite valuable to us and very difficult to replace. Seed stock can be hard to acquire unless you order early. So I would expect to see a shortage of some locally grown garlic in the MN region next season, hence probably higher costs for locally grown garlic.
My boys loved picking some of the carrots out of the bunker this weekend. One of the storage carrots Ashlan found was so big that he snacked on the whole carrot on and off all day long. They said they taste like candy! I wonder if you’re little trick or treaters would think the same? Anyway, we’ll enjoy the sweet, tender goodness of these freshly harvested carrots simply raw. The variety I have in the boxes this week is called Laguna.
Happy Halloween! Hope all the ghosts and goblins have a fun and safe night.
FYI: We are sold out of the fall and winter csa shares for the year. The fall/winter delivery schedules are listed on our CSA pick-up site info page.

Come celebrate the season’s harvest as our days begin to slow down. We’ll savor the foods grown up and down the river valley. What a great way to have a girls night out, a couples date, or just an excuse to mingle with some other folks who enjoy good food.
