As it’s been the main topic of conversation, or shall I say grumblings, this spring has been slow to come. As I picked spinach on Monday, snow and sleet sputtered hitting the covering of the hoophouse. Having extra weather protection for growing has certainly been a plus in recent years.

The greenhouse is full of little plants waiting their turn to go out to the fields. I hope to get a set of these babies in today while the sun is shining. The dirt has finally dried out enough to get in with the tractor again. The seeds planted in a small 2 day window about 3 weeks ago are just starting to poke up out of the dirt. Everything has been in slow motion, that is except me! I feel the franticness of spring clean-up, preparations for pizza night, and getting the gardens shifted into high gear have keep me hopping. But at least many things are getting done.

I hope you enjoy the first of this year’s fresh veggies. I’m hoping for asparagus next week. In all 7 years of the asparagus harvest, I’ve always had spears to harvest by this time but we can only march to Mother Nature’s beat sometimes.

The radishes are small but do have a bit of a kick. I particularly don’t like fresh, raw radishes. My boys both like them straight out of the dirt and don’t mind the grit. I prefer them cooked, sauteed, roasted, or grilled. This tames down that particular spiciness of the raw radish. If you like them raw, go for it. If not, try cooking them.

And about the coffee, this 1/2# sampler bag is compliments of FORTUNATA COFFEE in Fountain City, WI. How awesome is that! Joe Libera roasts the beans himself and distributes them to the local area. If you would be interested in receiving a coffee share with your CSA box, a 1/2# of beans would cost $5.50 and a full 1# bag would cost $11.
