Here we have a beautiful little flower bud of a bok choy plant. It’s edible, unusually tasty and equally lovely. If it reminds you of a tiny broccoli head, then you’ve got a good eye. Pac choy, pak choi, bok choy, or however you want to spell it, is a sister of broccoli. Both are members of the Brassica family. I think you would find this particular bud, though, quite sweet. The rest of the plant is wonderfully edible as well, including the stem after it sends up its flower spike. So don’t be shy, eat those greens….all of them!
The spinach is the tender first cutting of the year. I wash all the greens when they come in from the field; however, spinach is one of those greens that tends to hold onto its dirt. Either be sure to look it over well, or give it a rinse and spin in a salad spinner to be sure it is grit free.
Most all the garden planting is done beside a few last trays of brussel sprouts. The 250 melons (halona, arava, peace, and sweet favorite) are planted in their black landscaping mulch this year. Besides making weeding almost eliminated, I am hoping that the extra warmth from the black mulch will make them produce better here than in the past.
The 600 tomatoes are also planted in black landscape fabric this year, and their trellis system will be installed soon. It sure is exciting seeing all of the plants out there. The greenhouse sungold tomatoes having small green tomatoes growing on the vines too. Yeah for summer!
If you need to be reminded of pick-up information, it is all listed on our website under the CSA header: Pick-up Site Info. Tips for unfolding your box can be viewed as a video, thanks to Angelic Organics Farm and their you-tube video.
Our pizza nights on the farm now are open both Thursday and Fridays from 4:30-9pm. This Friday we have live music with Jeff White of the Sidekicks from Eau Claire, WI from 6-9pm. This is a great excuse to come and visit the farm, walk around the gardens, and enjoy the farm that you help support.
