Just as the weather is roasting, we are busy roasting the bounty from the garden. Another couple hundred pounds of tomatoes went through the wood-fired oven yesterday giving us more base for minestrone and other soups. A total of 45 gallons of pickles were processed this season, perhaps letting this crop be completed for the winter. But I know more pickling cucumbers will come next week if anyone is looking to buy some wholesale let me know. I would also have dill.

We are also getting creative in finding ways to roast eggplant and create dishes containing eggplant for the winter season. I’m quite fond of the roasted eggplant dip (recipe in last weeks newsletter). I have eaten lots of it on crackers, Vanessa likes it over eggs, and I added a cup of it to our raw hamburger and used it to moisten our burgers. Little did my boys know how many veggies I snuck into those burgers that they loved!

We will have some garlic to add to the boxes starting next week. Unfortunately, our garlic crop suffered a lot of winter kill. We lost lots of our seed stock and have a very short supply to return to our members. We will be purchasing new seed stock for planting this year, but this will take a couple years to rebuild to the level that we were once at. Sad to say…:(

Events this Week and our Wood-Fired Pizza Schedule…

Open both Thursdays and Fridays thru the end of August, 4:30-9pm. Our live music will be on Friday evening this week, featuring Small Potatoes from 6-9pm.

Next week, we will begin our fall pizza schedule, meaning we are only open on Friday evenings throughout the month of September.

A special event will occur Thursday evening during our pizza night which includes a showing of a movie by the Buffalo-Pepin Counties Wellness Coalition titled “A Place at the Table”. Reservations are required for the free pizza meal and a seat for the show. A panel discussion will follow the movie. This is an excellent thought provoking movie breaking down the issues of poverty, obesity, and hunger in America.
