The new item this week is the Fortex Pole Beans. I’ve wanted to grow them for a while, but there were seed shortages a couple of years. So they are finally here and wow they are quite the bean. Here’s the description from a catalog: Extraordinaire! A French bean that’s bigger and tastier- a new classic. A gourmet’s delight, this stringless French variety is everything you wish for in a bean: tender, green, mildly sweet, nutty, meaty, savory. Wildly popular in France (the French know beans), you can pick them from 6 to 11 inches. I kept tasting them as I was picking to check for quality and they were quite good despite the size. And as I’ve found my back to be a bit crabby this year, I’m enjoying picking these beans while standing. Bonus Points! So have a try…the boys found them to be really fun long “french fries”.
The other trial item I grew this year was the yellow doll watermelon. There were a few mishaps with wind ripping off the landscape fabric early in the season which resulted in the death of some of our plants. However, we still had some survive. Let me know how you like them. I personally find them delicious and love their small size. I simply don’t want to lift 100s of big watermelons anymore and then how do they fit in your box anyways? So these yellow dolls will most likely be planted in higher quantities next year.
Enjoy the bounty as it is starting to slow down in the field. Soon we’ll be turning to more fall delights!
Until next time,
