Anna, our intern of the summer, has taken leave to return to Oklahoma. She was such a joy to have at the farm this year. Full of positive energy and always eager to learn something new. By the time she left this fall, she had grown so much and taken on a sense of confidence in her kitchen abilities. We wish her best on her next journey.

So, now the days are a bit more quiet (though not that less busy quite yet) as it’s just me on the farm. However, many things are getting ready for the winter to come. Potatoes, beets, cabbage, and onions are tucked away. Tomatoes have been roasted and transformed for their winter enjoyment. Many more items are nested in the freezers to feed us during a different season. However, there are still plenty of cool season items hanging on for a while more. Garlic planting will occur in the next couple weeks as we put the gardens to bed for the winter.

This fall, we have a couple building projects in the works that need to be wrapped up. One is our new greenhouse which still needs its plastic cover wrapped over it. However, the spinach is growing in there and will have its blanket soon. The old hoophouse has been revamped and lots of quack grass root was removed. The old hoophouse has a bunch of cold tolerant lettuces, mache, endive, and other chill tolerant greens starting to grow for the off season. The other building project is a new pole shed to house our winter hay, field equipment, mowers, and tractors. Most of these items have been displaced from our barn as the barn has become utilized as a packing shed and facility for people to eat in during events. There’s more organizational projects this fall as well and I have managed to create a fairly large winter to-do list. It’s a hard job to not keep busy!

Reminder: We only have 3 more weeks to the Summer CSA season. We will go through week 21 this year since we skipped the 4th of July. I’ll post the fall CSA schedule soon.
