Remember: Week 3=Odd Week for those that are every other week members.
New items are starting to get ready as the sunshine shines on the fields. Kohlrabi is in the cabbage family and can be cooked like a turnip, but really comes into its own as a fresh, raw crispy vegetable either enjoyed peeled and sliced with dip or in one of the slaw recipes noted above.
Our earliest plantings of broccoli and cauliflower just started to make some heads so I included a small sampling of one or the other to enjoy as a fresh veggie or to add to a stir-fry. Perhaps a green onion dill dip would be a great way to enjoy cold, raw radishes on the hot 4th of of July weekend.
You can use the garlic scapes to replace a garlic clove in any recipe. The garlic scapes are the curly tendrils that are the preflower emergence from the garlic plant. It is best to pull these scapes and utilize them as a garlic substitute allowing the plant to put more energy to go to bulb sizing rather than flowering.
This week we’ve been working hard at trellising the tomatoes and pole beans, weeding, tilling under spent plants, and spraying our potatoes and eggplant with an organic insecticide to try to manage the bothersome Colorado Potato Beetles. The Colorado Potato Beetle is one of our biggest pests and attacks the potatoes and eggplant. We’ve been squishing adults and eggs for the past 2 weeks, but now will spray for the larvae that are young and munching on tender leaves.
The nemesis of the week is a red tail hawk who has found the full grown meat chickens to be his tasty morning treat. Predators this year have been on the prowl and have been a bit frustrating. I think we’ve lost a total of 15 chickens (both layers and meat birds) to predators this last month. To add to the feeling of wild kingdom out here, there have been two citings of a large black bear and mountain lion on the dugway just above our property.
